CanSkate (Learn to Skate)

Want your child to learn how to skate (correctly)? Then this program is perfect!

Whether they want to join hockey, figure skating, ringette, speed skating, or skate for fun... CanSkate is the start to the journey! Once they know the basics (and a bit more too) they'll be ready to enter whichever specialty they choose.

Why is CanSkate Perfect?

CanSkate was created by Skate Canada, which is the national organization our club is a part of. Skate Canada has spent years developing the perfect learn-to-skate program to teach skaters the proper fundamentals needed (such as correct pushing technique) while also receiving lots of support from qualified professional coaches. And lets not forget the fun-factor every child needs in order to feel motivated!

Stickers, ribbons, badges, and games!

Who’s it for?

For beginners of all ages, children or adults.

Who teaches it?

NCCP-trained professional coaches, assisted by trained program assistants. Our coaches go through extensive (Skate Canada and National Sport Certification) training to teach these programs and are required to update their qualifications/skills every season to continue teaching with us.

What will you learn?

Short answer: Balance, Control, and Agility! These skills are taught in 6 stages of learning with CanSkate focusing on Stages 1-3. A full chart can be found here:

What can you expect?

Action, movement and fun! Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active by using circuits, teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.

What do you need to participate?

All you need are a good pair of skates (preferably hockey or figure skates), a CSA-approved hockey helmet, long pants, mittens, warm sweater or jacket. Dress in layers – it will get warm!
